The Clayton County Fire Department
Past, Present and Future

The Clayton County Fire Department may now look back at the past, live in the present and prepare for the future. Clayton County Fire Department opened three new fire stations in September. Two of the stations Four and Nine were built to replace existing stations, which were built in 1967 and 1957, respectively. Both of the old stations were antiquated and ill equipped to meet the requirements of a modern day fire department.

Station Twelve, built on Mundy’s Mill Road is a new addition to the county’s compliment of stations. The site for Station Twelve was specifically chosen so the department could more quickly respond to the ever increasing number of calls in the Jonesboro area. All three stations, built identically, are state-of-the-art facilities boasting environmental safety features and technically advanced amenities.

Fire Chief Alex Cohilas was very much involved in designing the new stations.Working with Dunwoody and Beeland Architects and drawing from his twenty-five years of fire station living Chief Cohilas’ goal was to build stations which would provide a comfortable and safe environment for firefighters to live in and work from. In addition, he sought to build stations which would be large enough to accommodate future growth.

Each station can house 11 firefighters per day and are divided into three sections: a common day room/office area, a large three bay area for apparatus and separate sleeping quarters. Each kitchen contains top of the line stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher and three refrigerators, one for each shift. The day room features a large whiteboard and audiovisual equipment enabling each station to serve as a satellite training classroom.

The main office area is technologically advanced accommodating both PCs and laptop computers all personnel will use to document patient care reports. This system will be fully operational September 22, 2003 and will virtually eliminate any paper reports.

The large apparatus bays are designed to be environmentally safe and contain exhaust systems designed to extract diesel fumes from the bay when units leave the station to respond to emergencies. The bay floors are slip resistant and floor drains flow to an outside oil/water separator.

The sleeping quarters include restrooms and showers for both men and women and individual bed cubicles with privacy doors. Each cubicle is equipped with a desk, lockers and computer internet connections. This will allow individual firefighter/EMTs on duty to have quiet time in order to complete the educational activities of the department.

Please feel free to stop by and visit one of these new fire stations. We think you will agree they represent some of the finest public safety facilities in the State of Georgia.
