Challenge For Life

Challenge for Life

If your school or fire services educator has not as yet received your 160-page "Challenge for Life" manual and you would like to add this important curriculum to your school offerings and educational programs, please call the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation office at 404-320-6223 or 800-273-2876 or E-mail info@gfbf.org.

Recognizing that teenagers and young adults are more prone to sustaining fire injuries than any other population segment, the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation joined forces in 1995 with the Georgia Association of Fire Chiefs, the Georgia Fire Academy, and the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner to develop a special high school curriculum called "Challenge for Life."

Challenge for LifeThe "Challenge for Life" curriculum has received the support of the Georgia Board of Education, which noted that "the addition of comprehensive school-based education programs such as the "Challenge for Life" curriculum are welcomed components."

The "Challenge for Life" curriculum provides meaningful learning experiences for the student while providing teachers with fire safety materials that can be easily incorporated into the regular school curricula.

The hoped-for end result of having the "Challenge for Life" curriculum used in every Georgia high school and middle school is simple: fewer deaths and injuries from fire.

Each unit in the "Challenge for Life" curriculum contains the following sections:

  • Lesson Focus (identifies the key concern)
  • Primary & Related Objectives (specific to each teaching unit)
  • Lesson Steps (lesson plan for each unit)
  • For Your Information (information that students need to know)
  • Challenge Tools/Take It Home (exercises that provide knowledge and develop positive attitudes and skills)
  • Check It Out (ways to test student comprehension of each subject presented)
  • More than 1000 manuals have been printed and are being distributed to every high school and middle school in Georgia by district rangers with the Georgia Forestry Commission.
